Michelle Gilmer, teacher of mathematics at Pendleton High School in Anderson District 4, has won the 2011 American Board National Teacher of the Year competition. She will be honored at an award ceremony at the American Board headquarters in Washington D.C. on Friday, March 2.
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) said, ?I commend Michelle on her hard work and commitment to South Carolina?s students. Her selection as this year?s recipient serves as a true testament to her character and passion for teaching.?
American Board Teacher of the Year is an annual competition where American Board teacher alumni from each state are nominated for the award by their principals and compete for online votes from the education community.
?It has always been my dream to be a math teacher,? said Gilmer, who left a career in engineering for a new career path in the classroom. ?I hope to utilize my work experience by bringing real-world mathematics applications to the classroom.?
Gilmer, who was the South Carolina state winner, was chosen by American Board senior staff among six other state finalists based on an extensive interview covering professional development, student achievement and instructional design and delivery.
Attending the award presentation are Pendleton High principal Heather Gordon and Anderson 4 Superintendent Dr. Kathryn D?Andrea.
The American Board
The American Board is a state approved alternative teacher certification non profit that certifies career changers, substitute teachers, paraprofessionals and out-of-field teachers. Founded in 2001 via a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the American Board’s focus is building rural communities through education and employment. The American Board?s program allows highly-knowledgeable individuals from within their community to earn certification without additional class time, student teaching or state exams. The American Board?s goal is to improve the accessibility and affordability of certification to allow schools to hire highly-qualified teachers from within their community instead of importing teachers form out of state or over seas.
