South Charlotte Dentist, Dr. James Wells, Announces Adoption of Whole Patient Treatment Philosophy in Dental Practice

?There is more to good health than conscientious brushing and flossing your teeth, even though they remain important. The mouth must be taken care of like any other part of the body,? says Dr. James A. Wells of South Charlotte Dentistry in Charlotte, NC. Wells says this is because, ?it?s linked to the rest of the body.?

 

Dr. Wells believes in the medical philosophy of ?treat the whole patient.? Indeed the New York Times reports that studies show gum disease is associated with an increased risk for heart attack, stroke, altered glycemic control in people with diabetes and adverse pregnancy conditions like pre-eclampsia (pregnancy-induced high blood pressure), low birth weight and preterm birth.

 

A major impact can be made on the body when periodontal disease is treated by reducing inflammation and lowering the quantities of harmful bacteria in the mouth. ?It isn?t nailed down yet,? according to Dr. Martin J. Davis, professor of clinical dentistry at the college of Dental Medicine at Columbia, ?but there seems to be a link between the inflammation of gums and the inflammatory markers of heart disease.?

 

It is possible that oral bacteria enter the bloodstream. They then attach to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries, causing clots to form. Or perhaps inflammation itself increases plaque buildup. A study conducted in 2007 showed that periodontal disease increased the risk of heart disease. The increased risk for men was one third and the risk doubled it in women, even after controlling for smoking.

 

And there are more serious problems that neglecting oral care can lead to, including loss of life through oral cancer. Oral cancer kills about 8,000 people a year and afflicts 34,000. According to the New York Times, Dr. Michael Kahn, a professor of oral pathology at Tufts University compares oral cancer with the 11,000 cases of cervical cancer that are detected by the 60 million pap smears administered every year. ?A person dies every hour around the clock from oral cancer,? he said.

 

Prevention, screening and early treatment are critical to lowering the death rate.

The first symptom of oral cancer is often a very small white or red spot in the mouth. All of these problems are aggravated by patient smoking, taking certain medications, stress and other factors that the dentist should be informed about. That is why, according to Dr. Wells, ?I treat the whole patient.?

 

New dental research indicates that as many as 80 percent of Americans may have one form or another of gum disease that could be indicators of other medical concerns. When addressed and treated those same dental issues could save lives.

 

Wells goes on to add that he is aware of patients? anxieties and other special needs as well. ?My experience as a dentist has made me aware of the patient point of view,? says Wells. ?I?m dedicated to mastering patient care as well as the science of dentistry,? he says.

Bright Medical?s Study on Walkers, Rollators Reveals Severe Lack of Public Awareness

The survey was conducted by a local marketing consultant hired by Bright Medical to perform market research. Survey participants were both male and female, ages 50-60. The study ultimately revealed that 80 percent of all respondents were not aware of the different categories of walkers and the benefits provided by each product category. Only 30 percent of respondents were familiar with the term ?rollator.? A rollator is a medical device with wheels that is used as an aid for walking and sitting.

Walkers are commonly the preferred mobility aids for sprained ankles, foot fractures, and after knee replacements. Unlike crutches, which can cause unnecessary stress to the upper body, a modern walker can be adjusted to a comfortable height and require a slight bending of the arms to promote proper blood circulation. Crutches are often more cumbersome and less easily maneuvered than a rolling walker.

In response to the results of the survey, Bright Medical turned to social media such as Facebook, Twitter and the company blog, to explore and discuss product categories, the uses of each, benefits and other walker-related issues. According to a recent Bright Medical blog entry, a walker allows a patient to move more easily, complete daily tasks and travel.

The blog also discusses the difference between a standard walker and a rolling walker. A rolling walker, or rollator, is ideal for a patient with limited upper body strength. After completing the survey, one respondent, who wishes to remain anonymous, commented, ?I no longer have parents to worry about, but I?m starting to realize I should know this type of stuff for my own future. I didn?t know there were so many different walkers. I guess I am getting up there in years and should start researching this stuff.?

A rolling walker is ideal for a patient with limited upper body strength. Rolling walkers are available with two, three or four wheels. A knee walker is another option, allowing the user to minimize pressure on knee joints. Bariatric walkers, designed for larger users, are more stable and durable. Lightweight walkers tout a more narrow width than most walkers, and are ideal for easy storage and indoor use . Most walkers and rollators are adjustable to offer the user the maximum amount of comfort. Walker accessories are also available to increase convenience.
